How Sweet: A Storytelling Event Recap

In anticipation of Valentine’s Day, on Friday January 27, 2023, the External Affairs Committee (EAC) of West Windsor Arts presented an evening of sweets and stories. The EAC is made up of board and community members who come together to promote friendships, awareness, and funding in support of West Windsor Arts.

The evening began with a presentation by Kelly McCarron-Schwing of Cocoa Beau, featuring David Bradley Chocolates including a tasting and opportunity to purchase chocolates with 10% going to support West Windsor Arts. Kelly shared her “story” as a small business owner and lover of chocolate.

The host for the storytelling portion of the evening was Maureen Connolly, EAC Chair, board member, and professor at TCNJ. Maureen shared the first story by way of example, featuring a friend who had an unusually strong affinity for sweets. She encouraged the crowd to think of their best stories related to the theme, “how sweet”.

Seven other storytellers got up to the mic and shared stories including childhood valentines, the love story of a thumb and a pinky, and appreciation for the humor and grace we find in the sweet lives we live.

The winning storyteller of the night, Stuart Carroll, shared his own story of the sweet kindness paid to him by a person who mistakenly thought they might be related. He wove deception, humor, and, of course, sweetness into a 5-minute story that kept the audience laughing and engaged.

Keep an eye out for the next opportunity to bring the community together through storytelling again soon!
